HEIGHT & LAYER STACK

Mattress Thickness Guide for OEM and Wholesale Buyers

Total mattress height is the result of the support core, comfort layers, quilting and cover construction. It should be designed with product position and logistics in mind.

Mattress thickness is the total finished height created by the support core, comfort layers, quilting and cover construction. It is a useful product-positioning and logistics variable, but a thicker mattress is not automatically more supportive or higher quality.

OEM buyers should specify total height together with the layer stack that creates it. This makes quotations easier to compare and reduces the risk of a supplier reaching the target height with a different material mix.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS

Thickness Decisions That Affect Construction and Logistics

Build height from layers

Record the support core, transition layers, comfort layers and quilt package that create the finished height.

Connect height to position

Entry, mid-range and premium models should differ for reasons buyers can understand, not only by an arbitrary centimeter increase.

Check packaging impact

Greater finished height can affect compression behavior, carton dimensions, weight and container planning.

Keep size and height separate

Length × width defines footprint; total height is its own controlled specification.

HOW TO SPECIFY

Thickness Is a Construction Result

Total height should be the result of a defined support core, comfort stack, quilting and cover build. If the quotation only states 10-inch or 12-inch mattress without a layer schedule, two suppliers can reach the same height using very different materials.

Record nominal layer thicknesses and the finished-height target together. The approved sample then becomes the visual and comfort reference for the final assembled product.

Thickness and Product-Line Tiering

Height can help separate entry, mid-range and premium SKUs when it reflects real construction changes such as a taller spring unit, additional comfort layers, latex, a pillow top or a euro top.

Avoid using height as the only reason for a higher tier. Buyers should be able to identify the material or construction upgrade that justifies the product position.

Thickness, Roll Packing and Carton Planning

A taller construction generally changes material volume, compression behavior, carton size and loading efficiency. Roll-pack programs therefore need to evaluate finished height together with the actual spring/foam structure and recovery performance.

The customer-facing height statement should use the same measurement method and recovery point as quality control so the product page, carton instructions and inspection standard do not conflict.

Coordinating Thickness With Size and Firmness

Thickness should be planned alongside mattress footprint, firmness, bed-base requirements and packaging. A 25 cm mattress and a 30 cm mattress may use the same size name but require different layer stacks, border panels, carton dimensions and handling plans.

When several heights are offered in one range, define the material or construction difference behind each height. This helps buyers compare cost and product position without treating thickness alone as a measure of comfort or quality.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is mattress thickness the same as mattress size?

No. Size normally refers to length and width; thickness or height is a separate finished-product dimension.

Should buyers specify only the total mattress height?

No. Include the support core, comfort-layer thicknesses, quilting/top construction and finished-height target so the build can be compared accurately.

Does a thicker mattress automatically mean a better mattress?

No. Quality and suitability depend on the materials, construction, durability targets and intended use, not height alone.

How should thickness be verified for a roll-packed mattress?

Use the agreed recovery period and measurement method for the approved model, and apply that same method to production inspection.

Can height be used to create good-better-best tiers?

Yes, when the additional height comes from meaningful construction or material differences rather than cosmetic padding alone.
