CERTIFICATION & DOCUMENTATION

Mattress Certifications Guide for OEM and Wholesale Buyers

Certification should be treated as a sourcing requirement attached to the exact foam, fabric, latex or finished-product scope—not as a generic badge added after the mattress is built.

Mattress certification requirements should be written by claim scope. Foam, textile, latex and finished-product requirements can come from different programs, and a certificate for one component should not automatically be presented as certification of the entire mattress.

For OEM purchasing, confirm the destination market, the exact material or product scope, the document holder, validity and whether the approved production material is covered before sampling and labeling are finalized.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS

Certification Questions to Resolve Before Quotation

Define the claim first

Decide what the product must claim or document before selecting the material program.

Match document to scope

A certificate for foam does not automatically certify the fabric, latex or complete mattress.

Request evidence early

Certification requirements can affect material sourcing, sample cost and lead time.

Control listing language

Marketplace and retail claims should match the certificate holder, material scope and actual approved construction.

HOW TO SPECIFY

Certification Is Not a Universal Mattress Attribute

CertiPUR-US applies to flexible polyurethane foam and explicitly does not certify furniture, product lines or companies. A mattress containing certified foam therefore needs claims that accurately describe the foam scope rather than implying the complete mattress received that certification.

Textile programs such as OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 address textile products and accessories tested against harmful-substance criteria, while latex programs such as GOLS have their own scope and chain requirements. Buyers should match every claim to the material actually selected.

How to Add Certification to an OEM Brief

State the exact program or regulatory requirement, the component it applies to, the destination market and the documents you expect with the quotation or shipment. Request this information before sample approval because changing to a compliant material later can affect cost, feel, color or lead time.

For private-label packaging and product pages, keep certificate holder, product/material scope and approved claim wording in the project file. Do not reuse a supplier certificate for a different material family without confirming coverage.

Foam, Textile and Latex Claims Need Different Evidence

Flexible polyurethane foam may be evaluated under programs and test methods specific to foam; textiles and covers require textile-specific evidence; organic or natural latex claims need documentation that matches the selected latex material and the intended label.

This separation is particularly important when one mattress combines multiple certified components. The bill of materials should show which component supports each claim.

Certification Control During Production

Quality control should verify that the approved material source and specification are maintained when certification is part of the order. If a component is substituted, the project team should recheck whether the documentation and claim remain valid.

For repeat orders, keep current certificates and supporting documents linked to the approved material code instead of treating certification as a permanent generic attribute of the mattress model.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can every mattress containing CertiPUR-US foam be called CertiPUR-US certified?

No. CertiPUR-US states that it certifies flexible polyurethane foam, not the complete mattress, product line or company. Claims should accurately describe that the product contains certified foam when the program requirements are met.

Does a foam certificate also certify the mattress cover?

No. Foam and textile components have different scopes. Cover claims require documentation that applies to the selected textile or accessory.

When should certification requirements be stated?

Before quotation and sampling, so the factory can select compliant materials and include the documentation requirement in cost and lead-time planning.

What should buyers check on certification documents?

Check the program name, holder, product/material scope, validity, model or material family where applicable, and whether the final approved component is actually covered.

Can certified components be substituted freely?

No. A substitution can change the documentation scope and the finished-product claim, so it should be reviewed before production.
