FOAM PERFORMANCE

Foam Density and ILD Guide for Mattress OEM Buyers

Foam density and ILD describe different properties. Buyers should specify them together with thickness, layer role and recovery requirements rather than using one number as a shortcut.

Foam density and ILD/IFD describe different properties. Density is mass per unit volume and is often used with durability and material-cost decisions; indentation-force testing describes how much force is required to compress the foam under a defined test method and is used to compare firmness behavior.

A complete mattress foam specification should also state foam type, layer use, thickness, rebound or recovery targets where relevant, compression-set requirements and any required documentation. Density or ILD by itself is not enough to control a comfort layer.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS

Foam Measurements That Matter in an OEM Specification

Density is not firmness

A higher-density foam can still be soft if the ILD is low.

ILD is not durability

ILD helps describe compression feel; durability decisions also need density, compression-set and use-case context.

Specify each layer

Base support, transition, memory-foam and surface layers can require different density and ILD targets.

Control substitutions

Writing density, ILD, thickness and layer role into the brief reduces the chance of a visually similar but materially different substitution.

HOW TO SPECIFY

Density and ILD Answer Different Questions

Higher density does not automatically mean firmer foam, and a firm foam is not automatically the most durable option for every layer. Buyers should keep material density and compression firmness as separate fields in the bill of materials.

ASTM D3574 covers test methods for flexible polyurethane foam, while IFD/ILD values also depend on specimen and test conditions. When comparing quotations, make sure suppliers are using comparable methods and units.

How to Compare Foam Quotations

Compare foam type, density, ILD/IFD, thickness and layer position together. A surface memory-foam layer, transition foam and support foam perform different jobs even when some numeric values overlap.

Add compression-set, rebound/recovery, airflow or temperature-response requirements only when they matter to the approved construction. The goal is to control the performance that affects the finished mattress rather than collect numbers with no purchasing purpose.

How Density, Thickness and Layer Position Work Together

The same foam can feel different when used at a different thickness or in a different layer of the mattress. Surface comfort layers influence first-touch pressure relief, while transition and base layers affect deeper support and stability.

For substitutions, compare the complete property set and then evaluate the finished sample. A supplier should not replace an approved foam solely because the alternative has a similar density.

Choosing Foam by Layer Function

Base foam, transition foam, memory foam and quilting foam perform different jobs inside the mattress. Select each layer by its function first, then compare foam type, density, ILD or IFD, thickness and any performance requirement that matters to the approved construction.

After the material values are defined, evaluate them in the complete mattress sample. Layer thickness, position, the support core and quilting can change the finished feel, so an acceptable foam data sheet does not replace finished-product approval.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is foam density the same as firmness?

No. Density measures mass per unit volume. ILD/IFD is associated with indentation force under a defined test method, and finished mattress firmness also depends on the entire construction.

Can high-density foam be soft?

Yes. Density and compression firmness are different properties, so a higher-density foam can still be formulated with a softer indentation-force response.

Why should an OEM buyer request both density and ILD/IFD?

Using both helps prevent vague substitutions and makes the approved comfort layer easier to reproduce across repeat orders.

What other foam fields should be included?

State foam type, layer use, thickness and any relevant compression-set, recovery, airflow, certification or emissions requirements.

Should foam be approved only from a data sheet?

No. Data helps control the material, but the final mattress sample should also be evaluated because layer interactions affect the finished feel.
